SEND Local Area Inspection
Inspection of Northamptonshire County Council local area’s effectiveness in identifying and meeting the needs of, and improving outcomes for, children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities from 15 May 2017 to 19 May 2017
Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will carry out jointly an inspection of your local area. Under the Children and Families Act 2014, the government placed new duties on the local health, social and education services that provide for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The inspection will evaluate how effectively the local area:
- identifies the needs of children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities
- meets the needs of these children and young people so that their outcomes and chances of participating fully in society improve.
The inspection will also include an online webinar to allow other Northamptonshire County Council parents and carers to contribute. The webinar will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 15 May 2017. It will led by the lead inspector, who will ask parents and carers about their views and experiences on how effectively Northamptonshire County Council is fulfilling the above responsibilities.
If you would like to take part in this webinar then please follow this internet link http://bit.ly/LASENDNorthamtonshire
While we understand that many parents and carers may have views on their experience that extend before the introduction of the reforms in September 2014, it is important that this date is used as the start for gathering evidence about the impact of the reforms. We would also like parents and carers to understand that we will not be able to follow up or comment upon individual cases.
Information on local area duties toward children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities can be found on the Department for Education’s website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/send-guide-for-parents-and-carers

World Book Day
On Thursday 2nd March, the school took part in World Book Day. It was a very special day, as it marked 20 years of the event. The whole school took part, including teachers, and even anyone who did have a costume was actually dressed as a "muggle" from Harry Potter.
Some classes elected a winner for the best costume, and we are pleased to announce that in Asbru class Bridget Hillan won, in Elli class Emilia-Mae Diamond was chosen and in Sol class Cole Garscadden had the best costume. In year 6, Embla's winner was Mollie Cameron, Asgard voted Mason Allen and Jotnar chose Kimberley Gunfield. In reality, everyone was a winner as the costumes were all amazing, and we would like to thank everyone who took part.

Can you believe it but years 3, 4 and 5 are already thinking about Christmas. They are currently completing their stamp designs for the Royal Mail's Christmas stamp competition. The theme this year is 'what Christmas means to me'. The winning stamp will win a whopping £1000 worth of vouchers for its designer and a £1000 worth of vouchers for the school. We have some wonderful artists so I'm sure we are in with a good chance.

Flowers in the Forest
Artist Sophie Cullinan completed 3 workshops at school on Monday 6th February. She presented a whole school assembly introducing the Flowers in the Forest project which is part of the Deep Roots Tall Trees event running in Corby for 2016 and 2017 promoting the amazing woodlands on our door step. Year 5 children produced stunning flower sculptures which will light up and form a magical display in the woodland walk from the Corby Cube through the woods to the boating lake. Sophie will be returning to work with the children from years 4 and 5 during the remainder of February and March. Sophie was impressed by the children's behaviour today and their creativity. The sculptures produced were beautiful. Many thanks Sophie!

Extreme Weather Plan
We are very fortunate to be enjoying particularly mild weather for this time of year, however, should the weather become more extreme over the coming months we will follow our planned procedures.
The Academy aims to remain open in the event of snow; in these circumstances our normal curriculum may need to be adjusted according to staffing levels and pupil ratios. We will take the children outside to play in the snow, so please ensure that they have appropriate clothing for snow play including extra socks and a change of footwear.
In the event of very extreme weather conditions, for the safety of children and staff, it may be necessary to close the academy. Please be assured that we will take the decision to close only if it is absolutely necessary. We will notify parents of the situation at Danesholme Junior Academy by text – please make sure we have your most recent mobile phone number so that you receive all relevant information.
The County website address for checking school closure is www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/ismyschoolclosed and our own website will be updated. Local radio stations will regularly broadcast school closure updates (BBC Radio Northampton - 104.2 & 103.6 FM, Heart Radio - 96.6 FM, Connect 97.2 & 107.4 FM, Corby Radio - 96.3 FM).
